Metropolitan is committed to creating prosperity for Africa’s people through our various sponsorships. We support initiatives that assist in the growth and development of communities, and our objectives are guided by the principles of collaborative partnership, engagement, long-term sustainability and relevance

Metropolitan Soccer sponsorship

Metropolitan has played an integral role in development soccer for over 20 years, as we believe that sport empowers and develops communities. Through our sponsorship of the Metropolitan U19 Premier Cup and the Farouk Abrahams Goalkeeper Academy, we promote youth development and help prevent involvement in damaging and / or illegal activities.

We work hand-in-hand with the community in order to make our soccer sponsorships a success. By setting up local organising committees in areas where the tournaments are hosted, we are able to impart knowledge and skills to local administrators. We also make use of local catering and entertainment suppliers.

We are committed to the young players both on - and off - the field. Personalised life skills coaching sessions are a common feature of our sponsorship programmes. These sessions encourage and facilitate financial literacy, raise awareness about HIV/AIDS, and educate players on how to handle media interviews. In doing so, we hope to better equip these young players with skills that will stand them in good stead for a successful career.

The Metropolitan U19 Premier Cup (MPC)

The Metropolitan U19 Premier Cup is an annually hosted soccer event which brings together the best U19 soccer sides in our country. The tournament also includes visiting sides from the United Kingdom and African countries. Well known players like Benni McCarthy, Steven Pienaar, Ayanda Xulu and Thulani Serero have all cut their teeth at the MPC.

Farouk Abrahams Goalkeeper Academy (FAGA)

We don’t forget about that lonely figure between the sticks. Metropolitan is a proud sponsor of the Farouk Abrahams Goalkeeper Academy (FAGA) - the first in Africa to specialise in goalkeeping development at grassroots level.

The academy trains around 80 – 100 young players every Sunday morning in Wynberg. These youngsters range from 7 – 25 years old and come from diverse backgrounds. The Academy not only enhances the calibre of goalkeepers in the local field, but these players also feed directly into the Metropolitan Premier Cup

Clash of the Choirs

Metropolitan is the main sponsor of ‘Clash of the Choirs’, a highly-entertaining reality TV show that sees local choirs compete for the title of number one choir in South Africa. Through sponsoring the massively popular show, we aim to identify, support and develop talent from local communities.

Public Private Partnerships

Metropolitan believes in public private partnerships and engages with local government and municipalities to facilitate the building and upgrading of sporting infrastructure and community development. An example of this is the Thulamahashe Stadium, which had the first artificial turf in South Africa. The upgrade came as a result of the hosting of the Metropolitan COSAFA U20 Youth in Mpumalanga in 2007.

At Metropolitan, we firmly believe that together we can.
